Shank Types

Smooth shank nails are the most popular types, with economic cost due to less cost of materials.

Ring shank nails are used extensively in post-frame construction due to their superior performance. Ring shank nails had approximately twice the withdrawal resistance of smooth shank nails of the same diameter.

Smooth Shank Nails

If you are in the process of doing a roofing job, you may want to consider smooth shank roofing nails. These nails are the least expensive when you compare them to other roofing nails. They can also be made from copper, aluminum, stainless steel or galvanized carbon steel. A smooth shank roofing nail is used more often than the other nail types. Even though they make sure things are held secure, they don't provide the strong support that some of the other roofing nails provide.

Screw Shank Nails

Screw shank nails are used for wood and pallets primarily. The surface of the nail can be hot dipped and galvanized. If you need a nail that has the ability to hold items more securely, then screw shank nails should be used. The twisted shank gives these screws an advantage when it comes to securing a roof. Another characteristic of these nails is the flat head along with the diamond tip point. This enables it to penetrate roofing material easier. Wood or shingles are less likely to split when a roofing nail with a sharper tip is used, because there is less stress when it penetrates.

Ring Shank Nails

One type of roofing nail is the ring shank nail. The head on this nail is larger than the head on standard nails, which ensures that shingles are held fast and don't rip away under adverse conditions, such as strong winds. These nails are covered with a electrogalvanized surface. The ring shank nail is used primarily for asphalt roofing felts. The ring shank roofing nails can be made from a variety of substances including electrogalvanized carbon steel, as well as zinc-plated steel. Other materials include stainless steel, copper and aluminum.
