Carbon construction steel is usually divided into common carbon structural steel and high-quality concrete structural steel. Due to relative worse impurities, common carbon steel plate is cheaper, which is generally used in less quality requirements. The carbon content is usually under 0.3% and manganese content is no more than 0.8%. The plasticity, toughness and deformation are good, though the strength of common carbon structural steel plate is low. And it can be directly used without heat treatment. Usually this kind of carbon steel plate is widely applied in railway, bridge, construction as well as making different common components.

Compared with common carbon structural steel, high-quality structural steel contains lower sulfur content, phosphorus and other non metallic substances. On the basis of carbon content and different applications, this type of steel plate also can be divided into three sorts: low carbon structural steel plate with less than 0.25% carbon content, 08F and 08A1 are in great market demand with good deep drawability and weldability, whose carbon content is less than 0.1%.; medium carbon structural steel plate with 0.25~0.6% carbon content, is mainly used in under modulation condition and manufacturing equipment parts in machine building industry; high carbon structural steel plate with over 0.6% carbon content is greatly applied for manufacturing springs, rolls and gears.
