In the past, all capsules were made of gelatin. Even vegetarians in those days have taken gelatin capsules simply because they are the only ones available then. But with the increased awareness about the consequences of eating animal products, and the growing market for vegetarian products, many manufacturers are now producing different kinds of vegetarian capsules. The first vegetarian capsules are actually made of HPMC, another material by which veggie capsules are made of is pullulan which is produced from starch made by the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans. These organic plant alternatives to animal-based gelatin are ideal for making edible coating and blends well with moisture sensitive substances.

Vegetable based capsules or made of Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose or HPMC, which is a semi-synthetic inert material consisting of purified water and plant fiber-or cellulose.

This makes the vegetable capsule 100% plant-based, non toxic, 100% animal-free, Kosher, Halal, and Vegetarian. It’s also friendly to patients on gluten free diets.

Vegetable capsules are plain and straight forward. There is no guess work when using them. How to store empty capsule?

The high quality empty capsule not only reflect on their production process, but also in their storage methods. So it is every important to know the store conditions of two-piece capsule.
1. Hollow capsule has too little moisture easily crazing, too much moisture easily to be soft and deform. So the vacant  capsule water moisture should be controlled between 12.5 to17.5% when they were stored.
2. Containers of gelatin capsule should be placed on the shelves, avoiding directly towards windows and pipes. Put it in a cool ventilated place, avoiding sunlight and away from heat.
3.Cannot be placed at random, and cannot give it pressure.
4. The container should be kept sealed before used if it was opened, please take the corresponding sterilization measures, otherwise easy to cause bacterial contamination.
5. Storage temperature should be kept in 15 to 25 ℃; Keep in 35-65% relative humidity.
6. Do not store in high temperature and high humidity condition. Under heat condition, it will be soft , adhesion and deformation .Under low temperature or dry environment, the capsule is easy to crazing .
Do as above mentioned conditions to store capsule , the capsule can be well stored more than 9 months.     

The Structure Of HPMC Hollow Capsule  

Vegetarian two-piece capsule has two parts, body and cap. From the vacant capsule’s appearance,  the vegetable empty capsule cap and body are a hemispherical cylinder. On each part has a circular arc shape of concave groove, called locking ring. There are two or four or six oval dents between the capsule cap locking ring and incision, called locking point. HPMC vacant Capsule has a slight taper cutting edges. There are two slant holes in trimming place through the lock ring and guide ring, called an exhaust hole.

 Pullulan polysaccharides

    Pullulan polysaccharides is a kind of water-soluble polysaccharide glue, finished product is white solid powder. Because of its good film-forming, fiber, the air resistance, adhesive, easy processing,and non-toxic performance, it has been widely used in medicine, food, light industry, and chemical industry. 

 Pullulan’s main application areas:

The right method to take capsule

The right way to take empty capsule: take a cup of 100 to 200 ml water and the temperature should be proper. The patients should stand or sit when to take capsules . Firstly, patients drink a mouthful of water and then put the two-piece capsule in the mouth, and drink a sip of water, swallow  gelatin capsules with water. Patients should not excessively bend or look up. Patients should better drink the remaining water, ensuring that the capsule rush into the stomach.

1. Get drugs from formal channels.

There are so many "poison gelatin capsule" events happen.

2. Not apart the two-piece capsule into two piece.
Gelatin Capsule has the ability to enhance the stability of drugs, to protect the digestive tract and respiratory tract from targeted drug directly stimulate and slow-release medicine effect etc. .Once get rid of the capsule shell, It may cause the medicine efficacy reduce, and increase the side effects.
3. Should not take capsules shell with hot water.
Most ingredients are gelatin capsule shell , in the cold water the capsule will slowly dissolve and become soft. But in the hot water it can rapidly melt and dissolve. If taking capsule shell with hot water, the empty capsule shell is easy damaged, the drug will be released ahead of time. So the medicine efficacy and safety will be influenced. therefore, the capsule drugs should take with cool water (but not too cold) or warm water properly.
4. Should not swallow capsules directly .
Swallow capsules directly may prevent capsules quickly into stomach, and the hollow capsules are likely to adhere to the esophagus, causing mucosal damage and even ulcers.
