In general formula R-SO3H, R is a hydrocarbon group. Sulfonic acid is mostly synthetic product, only a few kinds of sulfonic acid such as NH2CH2CH2SO3H exist in nature. Sulfonic acid group is a strong water-soluble strong acid group, and sulfonic acid is water-soluble strong acid compound. For example, sulfonyl chloride is an intermediate used in organic synthesis and analytical chemistry. Sulfanilamide is a kind of anti-inflammatory drugs. Saccharin sodium is also a sulfanilamide.
