Function:
Gingerols are the active substances in Ginger extract. Scientific studies have demonstrated that Ginger is an excellent natural stomach-soother and digestive system tonic. In addition, Ginger possesses a number of constituents that may support healthy cardiovascular function, encourage a balanced immune system response, and may help to temporarily alleviate menstrual pain and osteoarthritic pain.
1. Digestive Support
Ginger root is a medicinal herb used primarily for the treatment of dyspepsia (discomfort after eating), this includes the symptoms of bloating, heartburn, flatulence, and nausea. It is also considered helpful as a preventative for motion sickness and as a digestive.
2. Relieve Nausea
Ginger appears to be highly effective against nausea.
For example, it has a long history of use as a sea sickness remedy, and there is some evidence that it may be as effective as prescription medication. Ginger may also relieve nausea and vomiting after surgery, and in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. But it may be the most effective when it comes to pregnancy-related nausea, such as morning sickness.
3. Painful menstrual periods
Some research shows that taking 1500 mg of ginger in three divided doses daily for the first three days of menstrual periods can reduce menstrual pain severity and other symptoms.
4. Osteoarthritis
Taking ginger can modestly reduce pain in some people with a form of arthritis called osteoarthritis. It involves degeneration of the joints in the body, leading to symptoms like joint pain and stiffness.
Safety
1. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers ginger to be a safe food supplement ("generally recognized as safe").
2. Large doses carry the potential for adverse reactions. Mild GI effects (eg, heartburn, diarrhea, mouth irritation) have been reported.
