RAS SYSTEM:
In order to complete a mass balance analysis the production capacity of the compact RAS system must be defined, from which expected maximum feed inputs can be deduced. Nitrate (NO32-), total ammonia nitrogen (TAN = NH3 + NH4+), dissolved oxygen (DO) and solids mass balance calculations can then be undertaken for RAS, to provide estimates of the:
• Dissolved oxygen levels required for stock growth, biological filtration and waste
degradation.
• Water flow requirements, culture tanks and all water treatment components.
• Accurate performance specifications for all water treatment components.
The functional parts of a RAS include a: (1) growing tank, (2) sump of particulate
Removal device, (3) Bio filter, (4) oxygen injection with U-tube aeration and, (5) water Circulation pump. Depending on the water temperature and fish species selected, a water heating system may be necessary. Ozone and ultraviolet sterilization also may be advantageous to reduce organic and bacteria loads.
