Perchloroethylene (PERC), also known as tetrachloroethylene, is an organic chemical that is widely used in dry cleaning and metal degreasing. It is also used in the manufacture of other chemicals and consumer products. It is a non-flammable liquid at room temperature, but easy to volatile with a sweet stimulating odor. Many people can smell PERC when the air contains one millionth of it. In 1821, Michael Faraday heated hexachloroethane for the first time to decompose it into PERC and chlorine.
Health hazards: The product of PERC has stimulative and anesthetic effects. Inhalation will cause acute poisoning with symptoms of upper respiratory tract irritation, tearing, and runny nose.
Symptoms occur after oral taking: dizziness, headache, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, blurred vision, numbness in the extremities, and even excitement, convulsions, coma, and death.
Chronic effects: One feels weakness, dizziness, nausea, flu and so on, and may have liver damage.
Repeated contact with the skin can cause dermatitis and eczema. For skin contact, remove contaminated clothing and thoroughly wash skin with soap water.
For eye contact: Lift eyelids, rinse with running water or saline, and seek medical advice.
For inhalation, one should quickly move from the scene to somewhere else with fresh air. Keep his respiratory tract smooth. If his breathing worsens, give him oxygen. If his breathing stops, give him artificial respiration immediately. Always seek medical advice.
For ingestion, drink plenty of warm water and induce vomiting. Seek medical advice.
