Bloodworms (Chironomus spp.) are the aquatic larval stages of different species of non-biting midge flies and form an important part of the aquatic food chain as nutrient recyclers by taking up nutrients (through grazing, scraping, collecting etc.) produced by primary consumers (e.g. photosynthesizing algae, bacteria, micro-algae & macrophytes). They provide these nutrients to the next trophic level (secondary consumers) and as such form an important food source for other aquatic insect larvae, amphibians, freshwater fish, and wading birds.

The bloodworms we offer for sale are harvested manually from riverbeds and man-made ponds in northern China. We only receive live bloodworms and purge them in our facility in aerated holding tanks in which the water is continuously cycled through a filtering and disinfecting system (ozone based).

Available in sleeved (cardboard) and sealed (aluminum foil) blisters (rigid vinyl) in the following sizes:

• SKU 88054: 50 g (1.75 OZ), 36 mini-cubes containing miniBloodworms. As the name implies we only use small bloodworms for filling these cubes, making this product well-suited for feeding inhabitants of nano and other small aquaria.
• SKU 88055: 100 g (3.5 OZ), 30 cubes. Our best-selling item for over 20 years.
• SKU 88155: 200 g (7 OZ), 60 cubes. Extra value pack.
• SKU 88255: 907 g (32 OZ) Roll-a-Cubes. A rolled-up blister containing 216 cubes packed in a sturdy carton. For the serious aquarist and professional aquarium service personnel.

All blisters are frozen individually in our quick-freezer. Each sleeve contains a lot code and date of expiry for tracking purposes. Samples of each lot are submitted to an accredited laboratory for Salmonella analyses before being sold.
