The whole fruit or seeds of the perennial herb Zingiberaceae, or its dried powder, scientific name Elettaria cardamomum, used as a spice, slightly spicy, its taste like camphor. In the East it is used as a condiment for dishes, especially curry. In Scandinavia, it is commonly used to season pasta. Other genera of the ginger family (e.g. Amomum, Alpinia, Aframomum) are sometimes called cardamom and are used for cooking in Africa and Asia, or sold as real cardamom.
