Echinacea purpurea (Eastern purple coneflower or Purple coneflower) is a species of flowering plant in the genus Echinacea. Its cone-shaped flowering heads are usually, but not always purple.It is native to eastern North America and present to some extent in the wild in much of the eastern, southeastern and midwest United States. It is also grown as an ornamental plant, and numerous cultivars have been developed for flower quality and plant form.

Echinacea increases the body’s ability to resist and fight infection, clears the blood of impurities and has been used for fevers, venereal diseases, hemorrhoids and as an aphrodisiac. Unquestionablely  its most important function as a botanical is as an immune system booster and blood purifier. For this reason, it has recently been considered for AIDS therapy.

Echinacea is one of the most useful herbs available to practitioners because it functions to  simultaneously stimulate the immune system, while it expedites the removal of toxins from the body.

Echinacea is recommended for common infections and can be tried in lieu of or in combination with conventional antibiotics. It is better to take the herb for two weeks at a time alternating with two weeks off to ensure its efficacy.
