A fine abrasive material, such as garnet, is introduced into the water stream just before it exits the jet. This combination of high velocity water and fine abrasive particles erode away the material being cut leaving a smooth, extremely accurate edge.

Finished parts usually require no de-burring or secondary machining process. Unlike other cutting methods, there is no work hardening of the material being cut, nor are there any changes to the physical or chemical properties of the work material because the Water jet generates virtually no heat during the cutting process.
