Oxytocin (or Oxt) is a 9-amino-acids-peptide which belongs to class of hormones and it could be naturally produced in hypothalamus and then released by posterior pituitary gland to the bloodstream or synthesized. This compound has molecular weight/mass of 1007.2 and its molecular formula is C43H66N12O12S2.


This research compound is known for more than century; in 1906 British scientist Henry H. Dale discovered its contracting action towards uterus. Just few years later, in 1910-1911, other researchers described its milk-secretion stimulating effect. In 1953 oxytocin’s amino acids sequence was decoded and after that it was synthesized by V. du Vigneaud.

Primal function of oxytocin is being a neuromodulator as in the brain but also in peripheral areas, also he plays great role in different aspects as behavioral, sexual or even reproductive. As other proteins it also has specific receptors, particularly those belong to rhodopsin-type. Moreover, oxytocin can decrease level of some cytokines and that influence inflammatory processes. However by now link between sexual response and oxytocin actions is still not that clear and none of controlled studies and trials have been done to prove it.
