Rhubarb Root Extract Description

Rhubarb is a plant. The root and underground stem (rhizome) are used to make medicine. Rhubarb root, also called sweet round-leaved dock or pieplant, is usually thought of as a fruit, but it is actually one of the few perennial vegetables in existence. Ordinary garden rhubarb carries the botanical name of Rheum rhaponticum, though there are other members of this botanical group that are also used for medicinal purposes. Chinese rhubarb is called da huang in traditional.

Rhubarb root extract laxative emodin is used primarily for digestive complaints including constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, and preparation for certain GI diagnostic procedures. Some people use rhubarb so they have to strain less during bowel movements; this reduces pain from hemorrhoids or tears in the skin lining the anal canal (anal fissures).

Rhubarb root extract is sometimes applied to the skin to treat cold sores.

In food, Rhubarb stems are eaten in pie and other recipes. Rhubarb root extract powder is also used as a flavoring agent.
