Until now the mangosteen fruit has remained unknown in North America and Europe, it is so prized by inhabitants of tropical rain forests that they often refer to mangosteen as the “ Queen of Fruits “, the Taiwanese have utilized the health benefit of these fruits for centuries in various applications.

The whole Mangosteen fruit was used and revered and is used by local inhabitants to relieve symptoms and associated conditions such as, Diarrhea, Dysentery, Cystitis, eczema and urinary disorders.

The mangosteen is renowned for its ability to reduce pain and fever as well as increase energy levels. Furthermore, it contains a very high concentration of Xanthones, one of the most powerful antioxidants ever discovered.

Mangosteen comes from the plant Garcinia Mangostana and can only be harvested once or twice a year.

The place of origin of Mangosteen is unknown but is believed to be the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas. Mainly found in Thailand, Kampuchea, Southern Vietnam, Burma throughout Malaysia, Singapore, provinces of Mindanao and the Philippines.

The mangosteen shares some of the same chemical makeup as the herb St. Johns Wort, and this includes sharing many of the same beneficial herbal remedies that this particular plant is known for.

It remains difficult to reintroduce this tree, as it is ultra tropical and cannot tolerate temperatures below 4-5º C. It also requires high humidity and an annual rainfall of at least 127 cm. with no extended periods of drought. The tree does not adapt to limestone and needs a deep, rich, organic soil, especially sandy loam or laterite. Moreover, it must be sheltered from strong winds and salt spray, as well as saline soil or water. Finally, because of the long delicate taproot and poor lateral root development, transplanting is notoriously difficult.

The Mangosteen tree takes ten years to mature and bear fruit. About the size of a nectarine, the ripe fruit has a smooth, dark purple hard rind encasing snow white fruit.

Fully mature trees grow as high as 80 feet and may produce thousands of individual fruit every year.

The fruit is hand harvested from ladders or by means of a cutting pole and must not be allowed to fall to the ground due to potential bruising.

Everything from the tree is used for various applications. The fruit is usually eaten fresh or used to make jams and jellies.

In Ghana the twigs are used as chew sticks and in Thailand the wood was used to make handles for spears, rice pounders, and cabinet work or in construction.
