Silicon Carbide is a ceramic material which has light weight but very high hardness only ranks behind diamond, cubic boron nitride and boron carbide. The excellent high temperature strength is the best of all known ceramic materials. The disadvantage of Silicon Carbide is its weak fracture toughness, leading to considerable brittleness.
