Formic acid is a colorless pungent liquid. It can be made by the action concentrated sulphuric acid on the sodium salt, and occurs naturally in ants and stinging nettles. Formic acid is the simplest of the carboxylic acids. It has many industrial uses, in textile and leather manufacture as an industrial solvent, and as an intermediate.
