Torsion Bar Spring Assembly
TORSION BARS
Torsion bars provide spring action for the front suspension from the twisting of a metal bar. Torsion bars are anchored to the frame at one end and attached to the lower control arm at the other. The weight of the vehicle along with the movement of the control arm causes the rod to twist. The twisting of the metal rod provides a torsional spring that reacts in a similar manner to the coil spring. Ride height is controlled through use of an adjustable arm at the frame mounting point for the torsion bar.
Torsion bar is usually a spring, which returns to its original position when distorted. One end of the torsion bar is fastened to the frame that makes it unable to move during operation. Other end of torsion bar is attached to a pivot. When the force is exerted on the pivot end, it moves and moves the torsion bar along with it.
Torsion bar is one such significant equipment of the vehicle that maintains stability. It is a part of auto suspension, comprises of a bar, which twists to maintain the vehicle’s stability. Torsion bars are also known as sway bars. These sway bars support the components of automobile suspension. Thus, allowing them to move while driving on bouncy roads and resulting in a smooth ride.
Installing torsion bar in the vehicle has several advantages. Firstly, while towing heavy loads it eliminates hard bottoming. Secondly, it enhances vehicle handling on the road. Thirdly, it offers a consistent spring rate. This way a driver gets better vehicle control on lifted and lowered vehicles. Usually, torsion bars are precision machined. That ensures great quality and consistency, along with unmatched reliability. While installing a torsion bar, take care that bars are epoxy powdered coated, which means it has resistance to corrosion.
A torsion bar suspension, also known as a torsion spring suspension or torsion beam suspension, is a general term for any vehicle suspension that uses a torsion bar as its main weight bearing spring. One end of a long metal bar is attached firmly to the vehicle chassis; the opposite end terminates in a lever, the torsion key, mounted perpendicular to the bar, that is attached to a suspension arm, a spindle, or the axle. Vertical motion of the wheel causes the bar to twist around its axis and is resisted by the bar's torsion resistance.
