White birch is a deciduous tree, up to 25m high, diameter at breast height 50cm; crown oval, bark white, paper-like layered peeling, lenticels yellow. Branchlets are thin, reddish brown, glabrous, covered with white waxy white birch forest layer. Leaves triangular-ovate or rhombic-ovate, apex acuminate, base broadly cuneate, margin irregularly biserrate, lateral veins 5-8 pairs, abaxially sparsely oil-glandular dotted, glabrous or vein axils hairy. Infructescence solitary, pendulous, cylindrical. Nut small and flat, broadly winged on both sides. May-June; fruit ripe in August-October. Flowers unisexual, monoecious, catkins. Infructescence terete, bracts 3-7 mm long, middle lobe triangular, lateral lobes spreading or pendulous, nutlets ellipsoid, membranous wings as wide as or slightly wider than the fruit.
