使用者連接一組螢幕，鍵盤和滑鼠至切換器，然後再利用特殊的線材去將切換器連接至其餘的電腦主機。接著透過多電腦切換裝置上的開關或鍵盤上的按鍵去切換控制不同的電腦主機，可以將當前在使用的電腦主機切換成另一台所選擇到的電腦主機訊號。A user connects a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the KVM device, then uses special cables to connect the KVM device to the computers. Control is switched from one computer to another by the use of a switch or buttons on the KVM device, with the KVM passing the signals between the computers and the keyboard, mouse and monitor depending on which computer is currently selected.
