Dendrobine is a pyrrolizidine derivative alkaloid, which is extracted and isolated from the stem of Dendrobium nobile Lindl, a plant of the orchid family. Its biological activity is similar to that of picrotoxin, and it was determined by chemical and spectroscopic methods that dendrobine has a picrotoxane backbone. Dendrobine is the first Picrotoxane-type alkaloid to be detected.
