Single disc cutters are mainly applied to bore hard rock and mixed ground. Performance of single disc cutters can affect the efficiency and cost in TBM tunneling project. Cutter rings, cutter bearings, cutter seals and cutter hubs are the most important factors which can affect single disc cutters’ performance.

Cutter rings are forged with alloy tool steel and specially heat-treated to reach proper balance between hardness and toughness. And for different geology conditions, cutter rings are made into different profiles and width to get the maximum excavating efficiency. Tungsten carbide tips can be inserted in cutter rings if cutters are applied in very abrasive ground.

Single disc cutters are assembled with Timken tapered roller bearings which can make better performance than other bearings in harsh environment, and ensures large load capacity and long lifetime.

Metal floating seal and anti-dust seal are assembled in cutters, which can improve sealing ability even under high pressure. If necessary, the pressure compensated piston will be assembled in shaft, so lubrication oil will not leak and sand will not permeate, in this way cutter bearings have long lifetime.

Cutter hubs are heat-treated to high hardness in order to improve wear resistance and prevent them from deformation.

According to working conditions, cutters starting torque is adjusted to proper level by preloading bearings correctly in complex ground conditions especially in soft ground, in order that cutters rotate freely and are prevented from being blocked.
