On 1 September 2020, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy issued guidance on the use of the UKCA mark. From 1 January 2021, the UKCA mark will be used on products in the Great Britain market (England, Wales and Scotland, excluding Northern Ireland); However, to give the market more time to adapt to the new requirements, the CE mark will still be accepted on most products before January 1, 2022.
Relationship between THE UKCA mark and the CE mark
The UKCA mark will come into effect on 1 January 2021, however, in order to give businesses time to adapt to the new requirements, the UK market (Great Britain) will accept the CE mark on products by 1 January 2022.
For products that are fully manufactured and ready for market by 1 January 2021, these products can still be sold in the UK market (Great Britain area) using the CE mark until 1 January 2022.
Products currently being sold to the UK market and newly designed products that have not yet been launched will need to carry the UKCA logo from 1 January 2021
In order for the same new product to be able to enter the EU market, it is also necessary to obtain the CE mark. The UKCA mark will not be accepted by eu authorities. From 1 January 2022, the UKCA mark will be mandatory for entry into the UK market
(Great Britain) (exceptions exist for products subject to special transition deadlines)
Products entering Northern Ireland will continue to use the CE mark or THE UK(NI) mark under a special treatment agreement, with new changes expected after the referendum in 2024.
Add the UKCA logo
Until 1 January 2023, for most products (except those subject to special rules), the UKCA mark may be added to the label or attached document of the product. From 1 January 2023, the UKCA logo must be added directly to products in most cases. So companies should start preparing for it
Here are the general rules:
The UKCA logo can only be affixed to the product by the manufacturer or its UK authorised representative (where permitted by law)
When the UKCA mark is affixed, the manufacturer is fully responsible for whether the product complies with the requirements of the relevant regulations
Only the UKCA mark can be used to demonstrate compliance with relevant UK law
Any marks or markings which may misunderstand the meaning or form of the UKCA marks shall not be provided to third parties
No other marks which affect the visibility, legibility or meaning of the UKCA mark shall be affixed to the product
The UKCA mark shall not be affixed to products unless expressly required by law.
UKCA certification process and THE European CE certification process:
1.Identify applicable UK regulations and standards
2.Self - verify product conformance
3.Determine whether conformity assessment by a UK notified body is required
4.Test product conformance
5.Save the required technical documentation
6.Products shall be affixed with UKCA logo and issued with UKCA DoC
